Narcolepsy

Motionless eyes that don’t respond
Blanking me since I grew fond
Of the words that she writes
Glitter stuck to teary skin
No outside information getting in
As black birds take flight

Summer sunlight, ice-cream delight
Can she come outside and play?
We’ll eat some worms and treat her burns
She’s still trapped in bed today

She tells me secrets in her sleep
One, two, three, she’s counting sheep
The bright lights never scare
I call her a friend, my guardian
To protect and teach an important lesson
All this sight from her stare

Orange days, on her bed she lays
Shedding her scale every hour
We’ll take some time to decipher her mime
Before her fluids turn sour

She’s watching over me in her sleep…
She’s watching over me

I’m learning that it’s just a mask
She wears it to perform the task
Of taking off all her shyness
A statuesque figurine
Shaped from a tub of plasticine
And forming her likeness

Mauve knitwear matching her hair
Bony fingers clasped together
Cookie-dough girl, her tongue unfurled
Frozen in time forever

She’s watching over me in her sleep…
She’s watching over me
